NMU Plans Listening Sessions for Presidential Search

Northern Michigan University faculty, staff and students, and the broader community, are invited to provide input at virtual listening sessions hosted by the NMU presidential search advisory committee and Parker Executive Search, as they develop a position description for NMU's next president. Six sessions are scheduled Jan. 26-28. All will be held in a Zoom webinar format, with the ability to view and type comments or questions for onscreen panelists.

NMU Hockey Endowment Will Heighten Program

Marquette couple Bob Cowell and Kathleen Olivier have established a multi-year, $1 million endowment for Northern Michigan University's hockey program. The longtime Wildcat fans said they hope their gift serves as a “catalyst” for generating additional private support critical to helping NMU compete with larger Division I programs in recruiting top talent and achieving sustained success.

New Webinar with Book Authors Debuts

Lynn Domina, Northern Michigan University English department head and professor, is launching a new webinar series titled "Let's Talk Books at NMU" on Friday, Jan. 21. Each month, she will invite a scholar with a recently published book to join her for a discussion of their work. The webinars will be held at 1 p.m. the third Friday of each month. The public is invited to join.

Northern Michigan University Grounds Supervisor Andy Smith has had a passion for landscaping ever since he was a 9-year-old boy mowing lawns in hopes of raising enough money to buy a brand new bike. Now he leads NMU's efforts to transform its campus into the aesthetically pleasing space that it is.

NMU to Begin Random Testing

Northern Michigan University will implement mass random COVID-19 testing when the winter semester begins next week. It will also expand vaccination and booster shot availability at the NMU Health Center. Interim President Kerri Schuiling made the announcements in a campus-wide email on Tuesday.

Alumna Returns to MEDC as COO

Jen Nelson, a 1999 speech communication graduate of Northern Michigan University, has been appointed chief operating officer for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. She returns to MEDC after serving four years as vice president of public policy and economic development for Business Leaders for Michigan.

Alumnus' Family Boasts Nine Eagle Scouts

Northern Michigan University alumnus Al Salmi of Rapid River recently delivered the "Eagle Charge" to two of his grandsons, as they became the eighth and ninth Eagle Scouts in the family during a double awards ceremony in Minnesota. Salmi earned his award from Marquette Troop 359 in 1963, while attending NMU. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1965 and a master's in 1967.
