Upper Peninsula high school seniors who plan to enroll at a college or university in fall 2022 and pursue a health care field are invited to participate in an essay contest celebrating National Rural Health Day. Cash prizes to be awarded in the eastern, central and western U.P. regions are $500 for first place, $250 for second and $100 for third. The entry deadline is Friday, Oct. 15. 

Northern Michigan University Assistant Professor Stacy Boyer-Davis is the recipient of the 2021 Accountant Teaching and Excellence Award from the Michigan Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA). The award recognizes educators in the profession for the crucial role they play in shaping and growing the CPA pipeline and the future of the industry.

Kerri Schuiling is the new interim president at Northern Michigan University, effective immediately. The NMU alumna previously served as the university's provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. Her appointment was unanimously approved by the NMU Board of Trustees at its Oct. 1 business meeting.

The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees voted unanimously today to appoint NMU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Kerri Schuiling, Ph.D., to serve as interim university president until we select a successor to Dr. Fritz Erickson. Dr. Schuiling has accepted the appointment and will immediately step into the interim leadership position, with her contract to be negotiated with Vice Chair Steve Young and me and brought back to the board for approval.

The Northern Michigan University Native American Student Association will host the annual Indigenous Peoples' Day celebration on Monday, Oct. 11. This year's theme is “A Day of Healing and Celebration.” The events are open to the public.

The Northern Michigan University Regional Police Academy will host an informational meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Gogebic Community College. The meeting will start at 5 p.m. CST in the Solin Business Center room B-12 and last about 45 minutes. It is for those interested in attending NMU's Regional Police Academy, a 16-week session that begins in May and concludes in August.  

The Two Books, Two Communities program, a partnership between Northern Michigan University and the Marquette and Alger County communities, will host its Fried Walleye and Cherry Pie Author Readings and Panel Discussion at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, via Zoom. The Two Books, Two Communities program, a partnership between Northern Michigan University and the Marquette and Alger County communities, will host its Battle of the Recipe Box Taste Off Finale at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Munising School Public Library.

Northern Michigan University alumnus Kyle Bladow ('07 BA, '09 MA) will present "Environmental Justice in Louise Erdrich's Speculative Fiction" as the inaugural speaker for the Department of English's new Visiting Scholar Series. His talk is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, in room Peninsula I of the Northern Center. It is open to the public.

The Northern Michigan University Arts Chorale and University Choir will present their first concert of the 2021 Fall Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, in Reynolds Recital Hall.

The Two Books, Two Communities program will host an Open Mouth Open Mic event at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at the Ore Dock Brewing Company in Marquette, open to all.

Northern Michigan University is presenting a virtual lecture by Adam Weinstein titled “The Afghanistan Withdrawal” from 7-8:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27. The lecture will focus on U.S. intervention in Afghanistan, the resurgence of the Taliban and the fall of Kandahar and Kabul. 

Northern Michigan University's Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center will host a free Campus and Marquette Bus Tour from 3-4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1. The Beaumier Center's director Daniel Truckey will lead the tour. Attendees will discover how NMU has changed throughout the decades. Participants will also travel through Marquette's commercial and historic districts to see the location of old off-campus hangouts and hear stories from years past. 

Northern Michigan University's Department of Theatre and Dance will present a CO/LAB COLLECTIVE dance showcase at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 2, at Forest Roberts Theatre. A sensory-friendly Theatre For All performance will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1.

Northern Michigan University's 2021 Homecoming will feature a full slate of activities for alumni, faculty, staff, students and community members Oct. 1-3. NMU is offering a schedule of ways for Wildcats—both near and far—to get involved and share their green and gold pride. This year's celebration is sponsored by Innovate Marquette SmartZone's Make it Marquette campaign. 

Five Northern Michigan University alumni, faculty and staff were among 11 recipients of the 24th annual City of Marquette Art Awards, presented Sunday, Sept. 12. The red-carpet affair honored outstanding individuals who have made an impact on arts and culture in Marquette. 

Northern Michigan University's Department of Music will host the first Jazz Ensembles concert of the 2021 Fall Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in Reynolds Recital Hall. 

A free book launch party for Dorothy Paad's "Dance Your Dance, Sing Your Song," based on her positive experience overcoming challenges related to cerebral palsy and other factors to achieve her goal of taking dance classes at NMU, will be held Thursday, Sept. 23. The event is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. at NMU's Forest Roberts Theatre. It will feature a dance performance by NMU students, a book signing, light snacks and refreshments, and posters and other related items available for purchase. Masks are required.
