Grant Will Help U.P. Math Teachers

Northern Michigan University has been awarded a nearly $300,000 MiSTEM Advisory Council grant that will incorporate the Add+Vantage Math Recovery program for Upper Peninsula elementary schools and provide related training for teachers.

There are three MiSTEM Network regions in the Upper Peninsula. Chris Standerford directs the central region that covers Marquette, Alger, Delta, Menominee, Schoolcraft, Dickinson and Iron counties. He also directs NMU’s Seaborg Center, which will contribute expertise to the grant-funded effort.

Faculty Assurance Argument Authors Needed

NMU is seeking two faculty members to research and author the university’s assurance argument as the next step in maintaining its accreditation. They will interview key leadership across campus and develop narratives and assemble evidence based around different criteria and core components. The application deadline is Feb. 22. Release time is available to compensate for the estimated 20 service hours per week from Summer 2019 through May 2020.

NMU Hosts UP 200 Warming Tent

Northern Michigan University will host a heated hospitality tent for the general public near the starting gate of the UP 200 sled dog race on Friday, Feb. 16. The tent will be open from 6-8:30 p.m. next to the old City Hall on Washington Street. Admission is free. This family-friendly event will include hot chocolate courtesy of Simply Superior and snacks provided by Econo Foods.

'History Hounds' Program Feb. 13 at Beaumier

The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center will host a Historical Society of Michigan presentation titled "Murder and Mayhem II: True Crime in Michigan History." This free History Hounds Lecture Series event, offered via teleconference from Lansing, features author Tobin Buhk. It will explore cases including the 1916 poisoning of the Peck family of Grand Rapids, murderer Helmuth Schmidt and Mary McKnight, the "Strychnine Saint." The presentation begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the center in Gries Hall at NMU.

Exhibit Explores Technology at NMU

The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at Northern Michigan University will open a new exhibition titled “From Chalk to Light Boards: Technology at NMU.” The exhibition will feature dozens of artifacts, not only from the Beaumier Center’s collection, but from offices and storage facilities as well. A free opening reception with food and refreshments will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, in the center’s Gries Hall gallery.

TEDxNMU Tickets Available

Feb. 1, 2019
Tickets are available for Northern Michigan University's "TEDxNMU: Diving Deeper." Twelve speakers will share insights on how they dove headfirst into passions related to their jobs, hobbies or interests, in the hope of inspiring audience members to do the same. The event is scheduled from 1-8 p.m. Saturday, March 16, in Forest Roberts Theatre.

Singer-songwriter Jesse McCartney will perform at Northern Michigan University’s Berry Events Center at 7 p.m. Friday, March 29. Tickets will go on sale at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at NMU EZ ticket outlets and online. Prices are $20 seated and $25 floor for NMU students, and $30 seated and $35 floor for the general public.

NMU Ranks 6th Among Military Friendly Schools

Northern Michigan University ranks 6th among small public schools nationwide that have been designated 2019-20 Military Friendly Schools by Victory Media. It is NMU's second consecutive Top-10 ranking in the category. The Military Friendly Schools designation honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide that provide benefits for military and veteran students.

Alumnus Reflects n AD Tenure at Vanderbilt

NMU alumnus David Williams II (’69 BS, ‘70 MA) stepped down as Vanderbilt’s vice chancellor for athletics and university affairs Jan. 31. He will maintain the law professor role he has held since 2000 and plants to establish a new Sports, Law and Society program. Williams' distinguished 27-year career in higher education administration also included serving as vice president for student and urban/community affairs and law professor at The Ohio State University. He is a past NMU Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. Memorial Chili Challenge at NMU

Northern Michigan University’s Hospitality Club will present the Memorial Chili Challenge from 1-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at the Jacobetti Complex. Admission is $5 for students and children and $10 for the general public. There will be door prizes, with additional chances to win for those who bring non-perishable items. The Hospitality Club is also seeking professional and amateur competitors to participate. Awards will be presented for Best Use of Heat, Most Original and People’s Choice.

New Exhibits Open at DeVos Art Museum

Northern Michigan University’s DeVos Art Museum will present an exhibition titled “April South-Olson: Points of Interest.” An opening reception for this show and the concurrent Faculty Biennial exhibition, which celebrates the creativity of NMU School of Art and Design faculty, will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25. Admission is free.

Wildcat Wellness Health Fair Feb. 12

Jan. 22, 2019
The annual Wildcat Wellness Health Fair at Northern Michigan University will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the University Center Great Lakes Rooms. It is free for NMU faculty, staff and students. The fair will offer a variety of health screenings and displays, including blood pressure, body fat assessments, tobacco cessation and substance abuse. There will also be Rape Aggression Defense System demonstrations.

Students Inspire Alumnus to Seek Office

NMU alumnus Brad Paquette (BA 2009) stated that he accepted a challenge from students in his high school civics course to take his “active citizenship” to the next level. So he decided to run for office and was elected to serve the 78th District in the Michigan House of Representatives. His committee appointments include vice chair of the House Education Committee for the 2019-20 legislative term. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in political science and pre-law from NMU, Paquette earned a master’s in teaching from Andrews University and served as an educator at Niles High School in the New Tech program. The 78th District he represents encompasses portions of Berrien and Cass counties.

Alumna's Typeface Design Wins Silver

Fayette, a typeface created by NMU Art and Design alumna Mia Cinelli (BA '11) and inspired by her 2012 visit to the U.P. ghost town, recently received a Graphis Silver Award for Typeface Design and was published in Graphis Typography 4. Fayette was a typical 'boom town,’ smelting iron ore from the Marquette Iron Range from 1867-1891. When it was no longer profitable, the town was abandoned. While in a small museum at the historic site, Cinelli saw sheets of paper with diligent notes on the town’s finances and supplies, penned by an unnamed bank teller/accountant.

NMU Hosts Three Minute Thesis Competition

Northern Michigan University presents the Three Minute Thesis, or 3MT, competition. This annual competition is held at over 600 universities in more than 65 countries. It gives graduate students the opportunity to showcase their theses. Competitors will have one slide and three minutes to explain their original research in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. The top three competitors earn a cash prize and the graduate winner will win $500 and travel to the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools competition in St. Louis.
