EAN Reaches 3,500 Subscribers

More than 3,500 Upper Peninsula residents have subscribed to Northern Michigan University's Educational Access Network. NMU administrators marked the milestone recently by honoring staff members involved in the effort and distributing 3,500 pieces of candy to match the number of subscriptions. The EAN provides broadband internet service through the university's high-speed LTE wireless broadband network to learners of all ages in a growing number of Upper Peninsula locations.

Pakistani Student Shares Impressions of NMU

Shiza Maryam is studying at Northern Michigan University this winter semester through the Global UGRAD Pakistan Program (IREX), which allows students from the country to study abroad. Maryam will give a cultural presentation on Pakistan at 4 p.m. Monday, March 25 in 1311 Jamrich Hall. The presentation will include facts about the country's tourism, language, art, music and special ceremony customs.

Erickson Testifies Before Subcommittee

NMU President Fritz Erickson recently testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education and Community Colleges as part of the state budget process. The subcommittee is comprised of mostly new members this cycle. It requested that university leaders address formula funding, first-generation students, enrollment trends and unique attributes of their institutions in their formal remarks.

Faculty Assurance Argument Authors Needed

NMU is seeking two faculty members to research and author the university’s assurance argument as the next step in maintaining its accreditation. They will interview key leadership across campus and develop narratives and assemble evidence based around different criteria and core components. The application deadline is Feb. 22. Release time is available to compensate for the estimated 20 service hours per week from Summer 2019 through May 2020.

Board Receives Transformational Report Draft

The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees today received a draft of the Strategic Resource Allocation (SRA) report from the implementation task force. The SRA project aligns with the university’s strategic plan by identifying opportunities for transformational change and reallocating resources to implement them. Beginning last year, it reviewed more than 600 academic and support programs campus-wide. The draft report extends beyond the individual program summaries to recommend several transformation initiatives.

Facilities Master Plan Presented

NMU President Fritz Erickson summarized the Campus Master Plan at Wednesday’s meeting of the Strategic Planning and Budgeting Advisory Committee. Key elements, all of which are contingent on external funding, include strengthening the academic core and creating an expanded arts corridor with a new university-community performance venue and parking ramp.

NMU Day of Giving Nets Support

Northern held its second NMU Day of Giving Nov. 27, in conjunction with the global charitable event, Giving Tuesday. Focus areas receiving significant support included the Northern Fund, the Flexible Aid Fund, student scholarships and the NMU Food Pantry. The university collected 2112 non-perishable food items and personal hygiene products for the pantry, surpassing its goal of 2,000 and doubling last year's total. The pantry also received more than $2,500 in cash gifts.

Studio 102 Enhances Online Course Delivery

NMU recently unveiled Studio 102, a new facility in the Harden Learning Resources Center that enables faculty to record content for online courses and explore virtual reality tools. The centerpiece is a glass lightboard that enables a professor to write in luminous liquid chalk while facing the camera, making “eye contact” with the audience and enhancing student engagement. Software flips the text so that it reads correctly during viewing. Studio lighting, along with acoustic panels on the walls and a rubber floor, also contribute to high-quality video and audio recording capability.
