Northern Michigan University will present “Juneteenth: Week of Jubilee,” an educational and cultural event series scheduled for June 16-20. The week is dedicated to honoring American history, celebrating the contributions of African American communities, and encouraging civic learning, unity and reflection.

Recognized as a federal holiday, Juneteenth commemorates the moment in 1865 when the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Galveston, Texas. NMU invites students, families and community members to participate in inclusive programming that highlights music, storytelling, the arts, and historical education.

“Juneteenth: Week of Jubilee is a community-centered opportunity to learn, connect and celebrate American history and values,” said Freddy Sims Jr., coordinator of NMU's Center for Community and Connection. “We look forward to welcoming the public to a meaningful series of events that inspire civic pride and cultural appreciation.”
