Six Northern Michigan University undergraduate students and six graduate students each received up to $2,000 for travel expenses to present their research or creative work at various conferences, beginning last semester and continuing through fall 2025. NMU Provost Anne Dahlman, in alignment with the university's Our Compass strategic plan, elected to use donor funds to support student travel.

Undergraduate recipients and their majors were: Kaye Hintz and Anna Patterson, psychology; Steven Reed, economics; Autumn Jennings, biology; Emma Roach, sociology and anthropology; and Amber Wager, chemistry. Graduate recipients were: Nicolette Visciano, English; Josh Pletcher, biology; and Nicole Markofski, Haillie McDonough, Eric Rodell and Logan Zupko, psychology.

Some of the events the travel funding supports include the National Conference of Undergraduate Research in Pittsburgh; Association for Behavior Analysis International annual convention in Washington, D.C.; American Society of Mammalogists annual meeting at Purdue University in Indiana; Association for Private Enterprise Education® in Guatemala City; Annual Meeting of the American Association of Biological Anthropologists in Baltimore, Md.; and the American Chemical Society in San Diego.

According to NMU Research and Sponsored Programs, Northern is ranked higher than comparable peers in the area of student research with faculty, so the travel investment supports an area of special strength and distinction.
