NMU Hosts Statewide Wood Energy Workshop

Northern Michigan University will host a statewide wood energy workshop from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18. This interactive workshop will bring together leaders from Michigan's forest products industry, policy makers, researchers, conservation officials, engineers, economic development experts, loggers and others interested in forest-based renewable energy technologies.

Nyberg Joins 'Growing Michigan' Workgroup

David Nyberg, executive director of Business Engagement and Economic Development at Northern Michigan University, has been appointed to the higher education workgroup of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's “Growing Michigan Together Council.” The bipartisan group seeks to increase the state's stagnant population and bolster its economy.

Student Receives KFC Foundation Scholarship

Northern Michigan University radiology student Mara Heino is one of 11 "exceptional individuals" selected to receive $20,000 scholarships from the KFC Foundation. The program is designed to help KFC restaurant employees pursue their college dreams. Heino works at the Marquette franchise.

NMU Alumni Award Recipients Announced

Northern Michigan University Alumni Relations has announced the recipients of its 2023 NMU Alumni Awards: Ellen J. Narotzky Kennedy ('71 MA, '72 MAE) of St. Paul, Minn., Distinguished Alumni; Mitchell Stephenson ('13 BA) of Dillon, Mont., Outstanding Young Alumni; and Charles Hawes ('77 BS) of Lansing, Mich., Alumni Service-Community.

Schaff Joins UPHS-Marquette

Dr. Eric Schaff, a radiation oncologist and 2013 NMU biology/physiology alumnus, has joined U.P. Health System-Marquette's Cancer Center team. According to a UPHS press release, Schaff specializes in the treatment of adult cancers, offering advanced personalized radiation options for Upper Peninsula residents close to home.

Alumnus Finds True Calling as Fishing Guide

NMU alumnus Alex Ermatinger graduated in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in environmental science and biology. After a few years working in chemical engineering and then pharmaceutical research, he realized that his true calling was to be a fishing guide. He had grown up fishing for salmon and steelhead in the northern Lower Peninsula. Ermatinger returns to the area to help clients chase the same species during their annual migration from Lake Michigan into rivers along the west coast of the state.

NMU President to Visit Iron Mountain

Northern Michigan University President Brock Tessman will meet with NMU alumni and friends at a reception-style event from 5:30-7 p.m. CST Wednesday, Aug. 9, at Pine Grove Country Club in Iron Mountain. He will provide a university update and chat with attendees over complimentary hors d'oeuvres and beverages.

Students Gain TV News Experience

Northern Michigan University multimedia journalism students have abundant opportunities for TV news internships and employment, with four commercial stations in the local market. The public television station on campus also broadcasts the student-led production Public Eye News (PEN), which introduces them to the diverse skills required for the industry.

NMU Responds Proactively to AI

The rapid proliferation of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), which creates new content from existing data almost instantaneously, is transforming the educational landscape. Some are eagerly embracing AI as a powerful tool that will make learning more personalized and accessible, and provide-data driven insights for educators. Others are concerned it will increase academic dishonesty, generate biased and false information, and adversely impact security and employment. Northern Michigan University is taking proactive steps to ensure that it is incorporated responsibly and effectively.
