Northern Michigan University will host multiple alumni and community events on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19-20, to celebrate Homecoming. The schedule includes a parade, tailgate party and sporting events, along with various alumni events and campus tours.
In advance of the weekend, there will be an open house at Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, which recently relaunched its master's degree program, from 1-4 p.m. Thursday in room 1504 of The Science Building. That same afternoon, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tours of the addition to Weston Hall, which houses science labs and faculty offices, is scheduled at 2:30 p.m.
Friday's events kick off with NMU men's soccer taking on the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at noon at the NMU Soccer Fields behind the Superior Dome. Admission is free. Also beginning at noon and continuing until 4 p.m., NMU's Criminal Justice Department will host an informational open house for its cold case program, which recently helped to solve a decades-old crime in the U.P.
Following the soccer game, a Wildcat Welcome event will take place at the Northern Center outside the NMU Bookstore, offering homecoming information, along with free refreshments and cookies.
The first day of the NMU Green vs. Gold Wildcats and Alumni Swim and Dive meet will take place in the PEIF pool at 5 p.m.
The NMU Homecoming Parade will finish off the day at 5:30 p.m. The parade will start on Fair Avenue (in front of the Berry Events Center), then will travel down Third Street to Hewitt, then back on Front Street toward the Superior Dome.
The schedule of remaining events on Saturday, Sept. 20 is as follows:
-The Golden Wildcats Brunch for all who graduated from NMU in 1975 or earlier years will be held from 9:30-11 a.m. in the Northern Center Ballrooms. Please RSVP with Alumni Relations by calling 906-227-2610.
TheNMU Nursing Department for an event connecting alumni with faculty and current students. This event will include NMU School of Nursing alumni apparel, opportunities for networking over refreshments, and a panel presentation by select alumni.
-Day two of the NMU Green vs. Gold Wildcats and Alumni Swim and Dive meet at 10 a.m. in the PEIF Pool.
-A historical walking tour of NMU's campus led by Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center Director Dan Truckey, from 11 a.m. to noon, beginning at the Carillon Towers outside of the Northern Center.
-The pre-game Tailgate Party from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in Lot 55 and the adjacent grassy area behind the Superior Dome. This event is open to the public and will celebrate the NMU football team prior to the game.
-The NMU Homecoming football game at 1 p.m. in the Superior Dome. The Wildcats will host Davenport University. Tickets can be purchased online through the NMU Ticket Office at a rate of $15 for the general public; $12 for NMU faculty/staff, military, seniors (60+) and students (18 and under); and free for NMU students with ID.
-Alumni meetups by decade will be held from 6:30-9 p.m. Alumni with a graduation year in the 1970s and prior will meet at the Holiday Inn in Marquette, 1980s at the Wooden Nickel, 1990s at Breakers Roadhouse, and 2000s to the present at DIGS.
