Carlson Receives Peter White Scholar Award

Josh Carlson, associate professor of Psychological Science, is this year's Peter White Scholar Award recipient at Northern Michigan University. The funding supports an additional testing component related to his research on the neuroscience of anxiety disorders and the impacts of a treatment called attention bias modification. Carlson's project previously secured a prestigious $350,000 grant from the National Institute of Mental Health.

NMU Named Bicycle Friendly University

Northern Michigan University has achieved bronze-level Bicycle Friendly University status, according to the awards announced Oct. 17 by the League of American Bicyclists. NMU is making its first appearance on the annual listing. Promoting sustainable transportation, which includes enhanced cycling infrastructure and programming, is one of five initiatives identified in the university's first-ever sustainability plan.

Economist Explains Wealthier World

Internationally recognized economist Deirdre McCloskey will explain how the world has gotten exponentially wealthier since 1800, and why it will continue on that trajectory, when she presents “It's Good to Be Rich: Why Liberalism Works” at Northern Michigan University. Her talk begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, in 1100 Jamrich Hall.
