Innovation Week Tickets Free for Relevant Faculty, Staff

SISU: The Innovation Institute at Northern Michigan University and Innovate Marquette are co-hosting the inaugural Innovation Week from Monday, May 8 to Wednesday, May 10. NMU faculty and support staff in related roles will have their $175 entry fees covered. Those unsure about whether they qualify are encouraged to check with their deans. The complimentary registration is good at nmu.edu/tickets through Tuesday, April 25.

NMU Orchestra Concert April 26

The Northern Michigan University Orchestra will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, in Reynolds Recital Hall. Pieces featured in the concert are “Thunder and Lightning Polka” by Johann Strauss, “The Winds of Poseidon” by Robert Smith, Bedrich Smetana's “Moldau River from Ma Vlast” and Arturo Marquez's “Danzon No. 2.”

NMU Grad Offers Spring Organizing Tips

For many, spring is the season for deep-cleaning and decluttering their homes. Northern Michigan University alumna Carrie Young is helping people tackle organizational challenges more effectively, efficiently and consistently so they can regain balance in their lives. The 1998 business management graduate parlayed her skills into a career as a professional organizer about 15 years ago. She works in the Toldedo, Ohio area.

NMU Open Mind Ensemble Performs

Northern Michigan University's Open Mind Ensemble, a mixed-instrument chamber ensemble that creates music and sonic spaces, will perform Saturday, April 22, in the Black Box Theatre. Utilizing spoken word, a variety of instruments—including found and homemade—and both standard and non-standard musical language, the OM Ensemble creates a space for creativity, acceptance and togetherness. The event is free and open to the public and starts at 3 p.m. for a 50-minute performance.

Student Research Celebration April 20

Northern Michigan University undergraduate and graduate students will share their academic contributions, ranging from research posters and oral presentations to creative writing and artwork, during the 27th annual Celebration of Student Scholarship on Thursday, April 20, in Jamrich Hall. The event is returning to an in-person format and is open to the public.

NMU Earns Silver STARS Rating

Northern Michigan University has earned a STARS Silver Rating—only 4.8 points shy of Gold—from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. The AASHE's Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) program measures and encourages sustainability in all aspects of higher education. 

CFA Receives $30K Research Subaward

The Center for Forensic Anthropology (CFA) at Northern Michigan University, which includes the Forensic Research Outdoor Station (FROST), recently received a $30,000 National Institute of Justice subaward from Colorado State University to help validate a novel method for estimating human time since death, or postmortem interval. NMU students will be involved in the research.

Students are 'Salamander Stewards'

When the spring thaw begins at Marquette's Presque Isle Park and there are a couple of rainy nights with temperatures in the 30s and 40s, blue-spotted salamanders suddenly emerge from their underground winter burrows. They migrate across remaining snow and the park's road to lay their eggs in a wetlands area behind the Moosewood Nature Center, then return to the other side. 

Distinguished Team: IACUC

Northern Michigan University's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) has won a Distinguished Team Award for its commitment as the backbone of animal research at NMU. The IACUC reviews research protocols that involve animals to ensure the study's correct animal treatment, scientific merit and proper ethical perspective.
