NMU Senior Art Exhibition Ends April 29

Northern Michigan University seniors graduating from the School of Art & Design have artwork displayed at the DeVos Art Museum through Friday, April 29. The exhibition features students concentrating in ceramics, computer art, digital cinema, drawing/painting, graphic design, human-centered design, illustration, metalsmithing/sculpture as well as photography and woodworking.

UP3D Exhibition at Beaumier Center

Northern Michigan University's Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center presents a "UP3D" display of 60 large three-dimensional stereograph images from the collection of Jack Deo of Marquette. Admission is free and 3D glasses will be provided. All of the images were taken in the late 19th century in communities and locations across the Upper Peninsula by some of the region's best-known photographers.

Alumna Joins Indigenous Runners in Boston Marathon

Northern Michigan University alumna Shayla Manitowabi-Huebner, who ran her first Boston Marathon on Monday as a member of the Native Women Running group, was featured in media coverage around the event of efforts to increase representation of Indigenous women in the running community by encouraging and featuring their involvement. The 2019 NMU sports science graduate “crushed” the race, as one article stated, with a finish time of 3:25:25 after only two months of serious training.

Els Advances to Finals of 3MT Midwest

As the winner of Northern Michigan University's Three Minute Thesis (3MT) graduate student competition, exercise science master's candidate Caro Els represented NMU at the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools 3MT competition. She advanced to the last round as one of eight finalists out of 43 participants, some of whom were doctoral students and from larger research institutions.

Berry to Receive Honorary Degree

John W. Berry Jr., a 1971 Northern Michigan University accounting and finance graduate who has supported his alma mater through student scholarships and athletic capital projects, will receive an honorary Doctor of Business degree at NMU's April 30 commencement. He will be recognized for his roles as a highly regarded business leader and philanthropist. Berry is a past recipient of Northern's highest alumni honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award.

NMU Assesses Mental Health Services

Northern Michigan University has started a comprehensive review of its mental health services. Former NMU Trustee Jim Haveman is leading the effort. He holds both a bachelor's and master's degree in social work, and previously served as director of the Michigan Department of Community Health. Haveman was also executive director of the Department of Mental Health, the Kent County Community Mental Health Program, and Project Rehab, a substance abuse program that was located in Grand Rapids.

Smith Named Student Commencement Speaker

Northern Michigan University graduating senior Hannah Smith of Waukesha, Wis., will be the student speaker at NMU's April 30 commencement. She will earn a bachelor's degree in multimedia journalism with a double minor in public relations and photography. Marquette native Andrew Vanwelsenaers will be the student soloist and receive a bachelor's degree in music. The baritone will lead the singing of the national anthem at the ceremony.
