Jenna Chappell, a Northern Michigan University senior from Onondaga, Mich., who will graduate cum laude on April 30 with a double major in criminal justice and anthropology, is the recipient of the 2022 Martha Griffiths Award from the American Association of University Women of Marquette (AAUW-Marquette).

Northern Michigan University seniors graduating from the School of Art & Design have artwork displayed at the DeVos Art Museum through Friday, April 29. The exhibition features students concentrating in ceramics, computer art, digital cinema, drawing/painting, graphic design, human-centered design, illustration, metalsmithing/sculpture as well as photography and woodworking. 

The Native American Student Association (NASA) at Northern Michigan University has unveiled a new logo that reflects the group's efforts to build an organizational structure that aligns with the traditional values of Native American people.

Northern Michigan University's Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center presents a "UP3D" display of 60 large three-dimensional stereograph images from the collection of Jack Deo of Marquette. Admission is free and 3D glasses will be provided. All of the images were taken in the late 19th century in communities and locations across the Upper Peninsula by some of the region's best-known photographers.

Northern Michigan University is the second most affordable insitution in Michigan, according to a ranking of the two four-year colleges or universities with the lowest tuition in each state released by UniversityHQ.org.

As the winner of Northern Michigan University's Three Minute Thesis (3MT) graduate student competition, exercise science master's candidate Caro Els represented NMU at the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools 3MT competition. She advanced to the last round as one of eight finalists out of 43 participants, some of whom were doctoral students and from larger research institutions.  

Northern Michigan University will present an honorary Doctor of Science degree to scientist Thomas Zurbuchen, the head of Science at NASA and former NMU trustee. He will also deliver the keynote address at the university's April 30 commencement.

Northern Michigan University graduating senior Hannah Smith of Waukesha, Wis., will be the student speaker at NMU's April 30 commencement. She will earn a bachelor's degree in multimedia journalism with a double minor in public relations and photography. Marquette native Andrew Vanwelsenaers will be the student soloist and receive a bachelor's degree in music. The baritone will lead the singing of the national anthem at the ceremony.

Northern Michigan University's Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter will be hosting its fourth annual Marquette Coffee Crawl on Saturday, April 23. Proceeds from this event will be donated to the Marquette Women's Center in support of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). 

Northern Michigan University alumnus Steven Snowaert has retired from the Ishpeming Police Department after a 39-year law enforcement career that began with NMU Public Safety. He also taught NMU criminal justice courses as an adjunct instructor. Snowaert had previously retired from the Marquette Police Department, where he spent 26 years in different capacities, before he was appointed as Ishpeming police chief in 2017.
