Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor will perform as part of Northern Michigan University's Siril Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Reynolds Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Northern Michigan University's College of Business will hold “The Big Pitch,” a competition involving six students pitching their business ideas to a panel of judges. The event is part of the 12th annual New Business Venture Competition. It begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 28, in Forest Roberts Theatre. A Business After Hours reception held in collaboration with the Lake Superior Community Partnership will precede The Big Pitch from 5-6:45 p.m. in the FRT lobby.

The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will offer an advance care planning workbook session at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 4, at the Upper Peninsula Health Plan office on Washington St. The registration deadline is Monday, March 25. Kate LaBeau, advance care planning program manager, will lead the discussion. This event is free to attend and open to the public.

Two sports announcing teams at Northern Michigan University won awards at the 2019 Michigan Student Broadcast Awards.

Shiza Maryam is studying at Northern Michigan University this winter semester through the Global UGRAD Pakistan Program (IREX), which allows students from the country to study abroad. Maryam will give a cultural presentation on Pakistan at 4 p.m. Monday, March 25 in 1311 Jamrich Hall. The presentation will include facts about the country's tourism, language, art, music and special ceremony customs.

Northern Michigan University ranks as having one of the best online master's in reading and literacy programs and is also a Best Virtual Campus for 2019, according to OnlineMasters.com.

Northern Michigan University will host “Taste Tour of the World” lunches at the Wildcat Den in the University Center from Tuesday, March 19 through Thursday, March 21. Each day will feature cuisine from a different country—France, Germany and Spain—in celebration of World Languages Week. The meals will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. They are free for NMU students with a meal plan. General admission is $9.75 and children can eat for $5.75. The menus follow:

Rock climber Lynn Hill, one of only two people in the world to succeed in making an all free, one-day ascent of The Nose on El Capitan in Yosemite Valley, will give a presentation at Northern Michigan University. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, in 1100 Jamrich Hall. Admission is free for NMU students and $2 for the general public.

The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will present “More than Beginning Photography” workshops. The registration deadline is Tuesday, March 19. Sessions are scheduled from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on the following Wednesdays: March 27, April 24, May 22 and June 26 in 404-A Cohodas Hall. Participants are invited to attend one or all sessions for $1 per session for NCLL members and $6 for non-members.

The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will present a program on Ending Hunger Alliance in Marquette's effort to feed children in need. The discussion will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 13, at the Peter White Public Library Shiras Room. It is open to the public and free to attend with the option of donating non-perishable food items.
