Northern Michigan University will embark on its third “Food 4 Fines” donation event, in which students who help those in need by contributing items to the NMU Food Pantry can alleviate their parking fines. 

Students and faculty from three academic disciplines are collaborating on behalf of a Marquette organization's endeavor to repurpose the deactivated Lower Harbor Ore Dock as a botanical and ecological center. 

For the second straight year, Northern Michigan University's DeVos Art Museum has received a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. The 2020 award of about $14,200 will allow the museum to expand programming, promote exhibitions and bring guest speakers and curators to campus.

Filmmaker Gloria Z. Greenfield will discuss her latest work, “The Fight of Our Lives: Defeating the Ideological War Against the West,” following a special screening of the film at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Jamrich 1100. The event is free and open to the public.

A volcano erupted twice, spewing “lava” water vertically into the air, during a demonstration on a Northern Michigan University parking lot. Because it is difficult to predict volcanic eruptions, much less study them from a safe distance, assistant professor Hans Lechner used an analog model to create an attention-grabbing simulation of the effect for his physical geography class on Wednesday.

Thirteen NMU students traveled to San Diego Oct. 18-22 for the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) International Conference. They attended presentations by keynote speakers, workshops and breakout sessions, and networked with fellow pre-professionals as well as practitioners in the field.

Representatives of companies on the cutting edge of Michigan's evolving cannabis industry will discuss careers, innovations and trends during a panel presentation at Northern Michigan University. The free event is scheduled from 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, in Reynolds Recital Hall.

Northern Michigan University's outdoor tennis courts, near the intramural fields off of Wright Street, will close for the season on Sunday, Nov. 3.

Northern Michigan University's CO/LAB COLLECTIVE presents What We Leave Behind: Addressing Climate Change Through Dance at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, through Saturday, Nov. 9, at Forest Roberts Theatre.

Northern Michigan University's Center for Upper Peninsula Studies and the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center will present the 19th annual Sonderegger Symposium, titled “Anishinaabek: East, South, West, North” on Friday, Nov. 1.
