Northern Michigan University will host an opportunity to learn about and celebrate "Diwali: Festival of Light" from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, in the Northern Center Ballrooms. This event, organized by various groups on campus, will feature traditional food, music and cultural performances.

Diwali is celebrated across South Asia and among the global Indian diaspora. Rooted in Jain, Hindu and Sikh traditions, it symbolizes the light over darkness and good over evil. Many observe the holiday by sharing food, lighting lamps and gathering with family.

This event will include opportunities to experience aspects of Diwali, from enjoying famous dishes to learning about the meaning behind the lights and decorations.

Tickets for the general public and staff are $25, NMU students are $10, while children 12 and under are free.

The event is co-sponsored by the Division of Library and Instructional Support, Lydia M. Olson Library, Department of English, Department of Languages, Literatures and International Studies, Department of Political Science, Marquette Great Start Family Coalition, Social Work Department, Department of Sociology & Anthropology, and the Anthropology Club. Find more information here
