Northern Michigan University's automotive technology program has received a brand new 2023 Ford Escape to further assist students in gaining hands-on experience with modern vehicle systems and technology they are likely to encounter in their careers. The vehicle was donated by Fox Marquette and Ford Motor Company, which also stand to benefit from the career preparation NMU provides for their potential future workforce of automotive technicians.
“This vehicle is a quadruple win for our program, the students, industry and consumers,” said Randal Klitzke, associate professor of Automotive Technology. “It helps our program stay current now and in the future, because this particular technology will be on the road 10-20 years from now. It's also a real benefit to the students to leave our program having worked on a vehicle they're likely to see again. And it's a win for industry that requires qualified technicians to service their vehicles. Overall, this is a great example of how we work with our local and corporate partners to move the industry forward. And consumers who rely on professionals to run diagnostics, repair and maintain their vehicles also benefit.”
The Ford Escape was delivered to NMU's Jacobetti Complex on Feb. 21. Students in the automotive technology lab gathered around it soon afterward, eager to get a glimpse inside and under the hood as a preview for future hands-on projects.
"We're proud to support the future of the automotive industry by donating this vehicle to NMU's automotive technology program,” said Fox Marquette General Manager Luke Hubbard. “Investing in hands-on learning helps develop the next generation of skilled technicians, aligning with our passion at Fox Motors for expanding knowledge and strengthening the industry. NMU's program and values reflect our culture of fostering growth and professional development within our team. This donation also aligns with our Fox Motors Technician Program, which provides a clear path for aspiring automotive technicians to refine their skills and earn state and manufacturer certifications."
“With dealer-sponsored career exploration programs like Ford's offered in partnership with secondary and post-secondary institutions, there's a specific curriculum that matches the vehicles,” Klitzke added. “It's the same courses that certified Ford/Lincoln technicians receive and they're continually updated. That's a big perk for our program and recognizes that educators, students and partner dealerships are all in this together.”
Northern's automotive technology program emphasizes real-world application, with significant time in hands-on labs. Students learn a blend of mechanical engineering, electrical systems and computer diagnostics, combining traditional mechanical skills with modern technology. Learn more here.
