Former Goalie is MSP K9 Handler

Dieter Kochan with K9 Roy

Dieter Kochan, a former Wildcat hockey goalie (1993-1997) who went on to play in the NHL, is the handler of a new K9 named Roy at the Michigan State Police Calumet Post. Kochan joined the MSP in 2008.

According to a MyUPNow.com story, Roy is one of seven dogs that graduated from the 2025 Basic Canine School, a 14-week intense training program.

Kochan and other handlers also went through training. They received more than 500 hours of instruction and covered more than 100 miles on foot with the canines training in tracking, narcotics detection, searches of buildings, areas and properties, obedience and aggression.

The MSP now has 42 canine teams placed throughout the state whose handlers answer calls 24/7, stated the MyUPNow.com report.
