FROST Aids Evidence Tech Training

The NMU Public Safety Institute conducts annual training for evidence technicians, alternating between an intensive two-week basic course one year and a series of two-day refreshers the next. The refreshers being held on campus this month focus on death investigations because the institute partnered with NMU’s Forensic Research Outdoor Station (FROST) and Forensic Anthropology Research Laboratory. Both locations offer hands-on training to complement the classroom instruction provided with support from the Michigan State Police.

'Reacting to the Past' Engages Students

NMU students were assigned various roles in this medieval scenario, based on historical documents. They engaged in lively small-group debates as they put aside personal opinion to lobby for their respective character’s chosen course of action.

Detroit Students Aim North

Graduating high school seniors in Detroit were able to get a head start on college before leaving their hometown through Aim North, a pilot program offered through Northern Michigan University’s Diversity and Inclusion Office. Students could take two summer courses, earning up to eight credits toward the liberal studies requirements for a degree prior to enrolling at NMU or another institution this fall.

Alumnus Joins Elevate97

Bill Hawker ('95 BS) built a career in professional sports, establishing corporate partnerships for three NFL north division franchises: the Bears, Packers and Lions. Now he has returned to Green Bay as director of business development for Elevate97. The business creates and distributes marketing solutions for world-renowned retail brands. Clients include Carhartt, Calvin Klein, Pandora jewelry, Tommy Hilfiger, TaylorMade Golf and his former employer, the Packers.

Woodworkers Inspired at Anderson Ranch

NMU Senior Tim Kruger has long been interested in woodworking, particularly furniture design. But “an epiphany” during a woodturning class led by Professor Jason Schneider convinced him to hone in on his true passion: teaching. Kruger was inspired to apply for a summer workshop at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, Colo., and received a scholarship to attend. Schneider also returned to “the Ranch,” where he had worked for a decade before joining NMU’s faculty, to teach two summer workshops.

Author Nicole Walker to Give Reading at NMU

The English department at Northern Michigan University will kick off its annual Visiting Writers Series with a reading by notable essayist and author Nicole Walker from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. The reading will be in Jamrich Hall 1318 and is open to the public. The event is the first of several that will take place on campus throughout the 2018-19 academic year.

NMU's UNITED Conference Sept. 24-25

The 13th annual UNITED Conference will be held Sept. 24-25 at Northern Michigan University. UNITED is a yearly conference composed of a broad range of presentations and films focusing on diversity and inclusion. This year’s speakers and events will address such topics as social justice, human rights and gender studies.

NMU Expands Homecoming Activities

Northern Michigan University's 2018 Homecoming celebration will feature a full slate of activities for alumni and community members Sept. 18-22. Three special additions this year include a community-wide ice cream social, the unveiling and dedication of a new Wildcat statue on campus and the premiere of a documentary on the 1975 national champion football team. The following events are free, unless otherwise indicated.

Berens Brings 'Manitowoc Minute' to NMU

Comedian Charlie Berens, the camouflage-clad host of the popular “Manitowoc Minute” online video series, will bring a live version of the show to Northern Michigan University. The Wisconsin native will discuss local headlines, da Packers and all things Midwestern during the Marquette stop of his “Oh My Gosh Tour.” His show begins at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in Forest Roberts Theatre. Tickets are $15 for the general public, $10 for students and $5 for NMU students.

Police Academy Holds Graduation

Northern Michigan University’s Regional Police Academy recently held its graduation ceremony. Fourteen recruits were given certificates of completion after 16 weeks of training that revolves around a curriculum set forth by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES).
