The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at Northern Michigan University will offer three free walking tours of NMU's campus this summer. All are open to the public. The tours are scheduled at 11 a.m. on June 20, July 11 and Aug. 8., beginning at the Carillon Towers next to the Northern Center just off Lee Drive.
Reservations are not required. Each tour will take about 90 minutes to complete and participants will walk about one mile through campus.
Beaumier Center Director/Curator Daniel Truckey, a 1990 graduate of Northern, will lead the tours. He will take visitors on a historical journey through campus, discussing its formation in 1899 and how it has changed physically and socially over the past 125 years. The tour will point out the many architectural styles on campus represented by Art Deco, Mid-century Modern, Post-Modern and Futuristic elements. Along the way, he will discuss some of the individuals and major events that helped to shape the campus.
