MARESA, NMU Address Child Care Shortage

Feb. 17, 2022 —

Efforts to improve child care availability and affordability in the region received a major boost this week when Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that the MI Tri-Share Child Care pilot program would expand to seven new facilitator hubs across the state, including the Marquette-Alger Educational Regional Service Agency. It was MARESA's partnership with Northern Michigan University—the first local employer to sign up for the program—that helped to secure $300,000 from the state for the hub's pilot year.

The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees has approved a revised structure for the Academic Affairs Division, effective July 1. Extended Learning and Community Engagement, which includes the College of Technology and Occupational Sciences, will move under Academic Affairs rather than continue as a separate division.

NMU Board Plans Brief Business Session Thursday

The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees will hold a brief business session at 1:10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in the Scott L. Holman Executive Conference Room in the Northern Center. It will also be livestreamed at https://bit.ly/nmuavstreaming. The only agenda item being addressed is "Academic Affairs Structure."

The UP200 Sled Dog Race, an Iditarod qualifier that starts and finishes in Marquette, will officially be “powered by” Northern Michigan University, beginning in 2023. NMU will become a Gold Sled Sponsor with naming rights for the event, building on a longstanding relationship with the U.P. Sled Dog Association. The official name for the 2023 race will be “UP200 – Powered by NMU.”

Northern Michigan University Biology Professor Neil Cumberlidge co-authored a conservation assessment published in the Raffles Bulletin on Zoology on the “vulnerable to extinction” status of the world's largest land crab. The coconut crab, native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans, has been disappearing off of the islands it traditionally inhabits.

The outcome of the March 9 presidential election in South Korea might depend in part on the work of Northern Michigan University alumnus YoungJong Lee. The 2012 media production graduate spends nearly every waking hour working on the campaign for the leading candidate in the race, Lee Jae-myung.

Northern Michigan University is a gold sponsor for the Meijer State Games of Michigan and the sole sponsor for the event's opening ceremony. The Meijer State Games is a multi-sport competition that welcomes all athletes regardless of age or ability.

Area middle school and high school students will soon receive a 36-page magazine featuring Career and Technical Education (CTE) academic and apprenticeship programs available locally that can lead to rewarding careers. The magazine is published by the CTE Committee comprised of Northern Michigan University, Marquette-Alger RESA, UP Construction Council and UP MIWorks.

Adam Sadberry, flutist in the Memphis Symphony, will perform at Northern Michigan University as part of the 2021-22 Siril Concert Series. His performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18 in Reynolds Recital Hall.
