NMU Hosts UP 200 Warming Tent

Feb. 8, 2019 —

Northern Michigan University will host a heated hospitality tent for the general public near the starting gate of the UP 200 sled dog race on Friday, Feb. 16. The tent will be open from 6-8:30 p.m. next to the old City Hall on Washington Street. Admission is free. This family-friendly event will include hot chocolate courtesy of Simply Superior and snacks provided by Econo Foods.

TEDxNMU Tickets Available

Feb. 1, 2019 —
Tickets are available for Northern Michigan University's "TEDxNMU: Diving Deeper." Twelve speakers will share insights on how they dove headfirst into passions related to their jobs, hobbies or interests, in the hope of inspiring audience members to do the same. The event is scheduled from 1-8 p.m. Saturday, March 16, in Forest Roberts Theatre.

Jesse McCartney to Perform at NMU

Singer-songwriter Jesse McCartney will perform at Northern Michigan University’s Berry Events Center at 7 p.m. Friday, March 29. Tickets will go on sale at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at NMU EZ ticket outlets and online. Prices are $20 seated and $25 floor for NMU students, and $30 seated and $35 floor for the general public.

NMU Ranks 6th Among Military Friendly Schools

Feb. 1, 2019 —
Northern Michigan University ranks 6th among small public schools nationwide that have been designated 2019-20 Military Friendly Schools by Victory Media. It is NMU's second consecutive Top-10 ranking in the category. The Military Friendly Schools designation honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide that provide benefits for military and veteran students.

Memorial Chili Challenge at NMU

Northern Michigan University’s Hospitality Club will present the Memorial Chili Challenge from 1-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at the Jacobetti Complex. Admission is $5 for students and children and $10 for the general public. There will be door prizes, with additional chances to win for those who bring non-perishable items. The Hospitality Club is also seeking professional and amateur competitors to participate. Awards will be presented for Best Use of Heat, Most Original and People’s Choice.

Wildcat Wellness Health Fair Feb. 12

Jan. 22, 2019 —
The annual Wildcat Wellness Health Fair at Northern Michigan University will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the University Center Great Lakes Rooms. It is free for NMU faculty, staff and students. The fair will offer a variety of health screenings and displays, including blood pressure, body fat assessments, tobacco cessation and substance abuse. There will also be Rape Aggression Defense System demonstrations.

Students Inspire Alumnus to Seek Office

NMU alumnus Brad Paquette (BA 2009) stated that he accepted a challenge from students in his high school civics course to take his “active citizenship” to the next level. So he decided to run for office and was elected to serve the 78th District in the Michigan House of Representatives. His committee appointments include vice chair of the House Education Committee for the 2019-20 legislative term. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in political science and pre-law from NMU, Paquette earned a master’s in teaching from Andrews University and served as an educator at Niles High School in the New Tech program. The 78th District he represents encompasses portions of Berrien and Cass counties.
