NMU will host a highly interactive Business After Hours open to the general public from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Harden Hall (formerly the Learning Resources Center). The event will demonstrate how technology is enhancing the facility's services and resources for both community and educational use. 

NMU's Student Leader Fellowship Program (SLFP) is expressing its appreciation for faculty and staff members who served as mentors over the past year. It also is recruiting new mentors for 2019-20. The following individuals acted as role models, providing guidance and support to Student Fellows as they strive to become leaders of their communities through service: 

The Marquette County Conservation District and Megan McConville, a Northern Michigan University professor who specializes in water chemistry, are seeking volunteers to help clean up trash and debris from Whetstone Brook and its surrounding banks. Crews will meet at Founders Landing, where the tributary spills into Lake Superior, at 10 a.m. and work until 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18. Prizes and lunch will be included. Volunteers should wear boots and gloves.

Northern Michigan University's Center for Teaching and Learning, along with the Extended Learning and Community Engagement division, held a recent open house celebration to honor outgoing and incoming scholars.

Registration for Career Exploration Summer Camps for grades 7-12 opens May 6. The camps will take place July 8-10 and July 17-19 and will be held at Northern Michigan University's Jacobetti Complex.

Tristan Ruiz has been selected as the student commencement speaker for the May 4 graduation ceremony at Northern Michigan University. Originally from Houston, Texas, Ruiz came to NMU to study biochemistry.

The Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center (UMBTC) has obtained a new microscope for its lab at Northern Michigan University that enables automated, high-quality fluorescence imaging. Faculty and student researchers will use the EVOS M7000 to more clearly distinguish biomarkers associated with glioblastoma, the most common and malignant type of brain tumor.

Before she graduates with a bachelor's degree in public relations, Northern Michigan University senior Haley Bussell wrote a song titled "Chosen Home" to remember her time at NMU and in Marquette.A music video of the tune was produced by seniors Joe Reynolds and Scott Crady, and produced by photo/video director Ryan Stephens (BS '15). A Northern Michigan University professor draws on his vast knowledge of Kierkegaard and his intellectual context, contemporary philosophy, and art from the Renaissance era to our own time in his new book Art and Selfhood: A Kierkegaardian Account.

Northern Michigan University's Serving Native Survivors Circle project will hold professional development training titled "“Privileging American Indian Ways of Knowing in Victim Services.” The free training is designed for tribal victim services employees, with an opportunity for CEUs available. Non-tribal victim services employees, along with students in Native American studies and social work, are also welcome to attend.
