Swedish Folk Musician to Play at NMU

Swedish musical artist and Grammy nominee Emilia Amper will present a folk musical performance with her band at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 29, in the Forest Roberts Theatre at Northern Michigan University. The event is $5 for NMU students, as well as guests under 18, and $10 for the public.

Medical Cannabis Symposium at NMU Oct. 6

A student organization at Northern Michigan University is hosting a “Medical Cannabis Symposium.” The event will cover a range of topics related to cannabis, including its chemistry and pharmacology, the social impact of legalization, Michigan laws and medical cannabis in K-12 schools. Presenters include professors, lawyers and industry experts.

NCLL Offers 'Green Burial' Program

The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will present “Green Burial: What is it and why should I be interested?” from 7-9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, in room 101B of the Superior Dome. The registration deadline is Monday, Oct. 1.

NCLL Hosts Gerrymandering Talk

Speaker Addresses Cannabis and Anxiety

Northern Michigan University alumnus Robert Torrence ('15 MS) will return to campus to give a presentation titled "Residual and acute effects of cannabis on emotional processing in anxiety disorders." His talk is scheduled from 4-5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in Jamrich 1100. It is open to the public.

New Wildcat Statue Unveiled

Northern’s new bronze wildcat statue, a much-anticipated addition to the campus landscape, was unveiled and dedicated Sept. 21. The statue was made possible through a gift from the estate of former NMU Board of Trustees chair and longtime NMU supporter Gil Ziegler (’60 BS).

NMU Board Invests in Strategic Plan

The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees today approved a 2018-19 general fund operating budget of nearly $113.8 million. The budget is $3.7 million, or 3.4 percent, higher than last year. The university is advancing its strategic plan with investments in student scholarships, new academic programs, a student success center and athletics. The increase also covers contractual obligations and inflationary cost increases related to utilities, supplies and other expenses.

NMU Dedicates Garden Named for Former Provost

Northern held a dedication ceremony for the new Paul L. Lang Jr. Garden on Sept. 14. Mona Lang of Marquette honored her late husband, who served as NMU’s provost, by contributing the lead gift to establish and maintain a perennial flower garden on the academic mall. She and their daughter, MacKenzie, attended the dedication.

Western Expedition Benefits Zoology Museum

Two undergraduate students accompanied Northern Michigan University Biology Associate Professor Kurt Galbreath on a month-long expedition in the Rocky Mountains this past summer to expand and diversify the collection of small mammal specimens in the Northern Museum of Zoology. Their work will also help support current and future research projects.
