Alumni Night at Detroit Tigers Recap

NMU alumni and friends at the pre-game reception

Detroit may be home to Lions and Tigers, but Wildcats received a warm welcome there earlier this month at two events hosted by the Northern Michigan University Alumni Association. A delegation of 340 Northern graduates and friends watched the Tigers pull out a 6-5 victory over the Angels during NMU Alumni Night at Comerica Park, with two-time graduate Adam Hamari ('05 BS, '13 MAE) serving as third-base umpire. Proceeds from a portion of ticket sales generated $1,700 for NMU's Alumni Legacy Scholarship.

Eighty people connected at an earlier reception at The Taphouse presented by Bell's Brewery in Little Caesar's Arena, which opened exclusively for Wildcats before the game. Interim President Gavin Leach delivered brief remarks to the group as they enjoyed light bites courtesy of Bell's and a cash bar. Other NMU administrators, staff members and Alumni Board members also attended.

“I had a great time hanging out with other Wildcats in Detroit!" said 1991 graduate and 2024 Alumni Achievement Award recipient Jim Thorburn of Livonia. “The happy hour was a blast, and the only thing better than seeing navy blue and orange at a Tigers game is seeing green and gold. It's always fun to see how many NMU connections pop up no matter where you are.”

NMU Alumni Relations is planning its next event in the Motor City: NMU Night at the Detroit Red Wings on Nov. 7. For updated information, visit nmu.edu/alumni or the NMU Alumni Association on Facebook.
